Job Description
We are seeking an experienced U.S. Mortgage Underwriter to perform end-to-end underwriting activities across the mortgage lifecycle. The role involves reviewing and analysing mortgage loan applications for eligibility, risk, and compliance, making independent credit decisions, and providing final loan approvals. The Underwriter will collaborate closely with internal teams to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant loan processing while adhering to investor, regulatory, and company guidelines.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Credit Decisioning
· Review and analyse mortgage loan applications for eligibility, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
· Evaluate borrower creditworthiness, income, assets, liabilities, collateral, and Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratios.
· Perform comprehensive underwriting analysis and make independent decisions on loan acceptance, conditions, or decline based on risk assessment.
· Provide final underwriting approval on mortgage loans in line with delegated authority.
Loan Lifecycle Support
· Perform underwriting analysis across the loan lifecycle, including:
o Loan origination support
o Underwriting coordination and review
o Document verification and validation
o Loan closing and post-closing activities
· Ensure loan files are complete, accurate, and ready for closing within defined SLAs.
Compliance, Risk & Quality
· Ensure all loans meet investor, regulatory, QC, and compliance guidelines (FHA, FNMA, FHLMC, VA, as applicable).
· Identify discrepancies, conditions, and potential risk factors; clearly document and communicate findings to relevant teams.
· Maintain accurate underwriting notes, checklists, and audit-ready documentation.
Escrow, Title & Servicing Support
· Review escrow and title documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with underwriting requirements.
· Support loan boarding and servicing by validating approved loan data.
· Assist with default and foreclosure support by reviewing loan documents and underwriting decisions, as required.
Collaboration & Systems
· Collaborate with processing, closing, QC, and servicing teams to resolve escalations and complex underwriting scenarios.
· Manage loan files and underwriting workflows using Encompass and other Loan Origination Systems (LOS).

Required Skills & Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
· 3–6 years of experience in U.S. mortgage underwriting or pre-underwriting.
· Strong knowledge of US mortgage processes, underwriting guidelines, and risk assessment.
· Hands-on experience with Encompass LOS and related mortgage systems.
· Solid understanding of credit reports, income analysis, financial statements, and collateral evaluation.
· Experience in QC, compliance, post-closing, and pre-purchase review activities.
· Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent documentation, communication, and stakeholder coordination abilities.
· Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Preferred Qualifications
· FHA, FNMA, FHLMC, or VA underwriting exposure.
· Certification in mortgage underwriting or related fields.
· Experience handling escalations, audits, or investor reviews.
